Recycling System
Brings Manufacturer to Full Compliance
A Midwestern ladder
manufacturer sought some method to satisfy regulatory limits on the
overflow to sewer from their two vibratory cleaning and deburring
operations. Such activities are necessary because, in the manufacturing
of their aluminum ladders, certain components require that jagged
edges be smoothed and an oily residue that is left after fabrication
be removed. They successfully accomplished these two tasks but in
the process created a by-product wastewater that "would exceed
the legal limits for fat, oils and grease if sewered,"
according to the firm. Following advice from a branch of their
state's Department of Natural Resources, one option the company
decided to explore was recycling the cleaning solution instead of
continuously disposing and recharging. That investigation led them
to the Arbortech Corporation. Their conversations, meetings, bench
and pilot scale testing eventually resulted in the implementation of
a turnkey closed-loop recycling system and, therefore, an end to
concerns about sewer discharge, since sewer discharge was completely
eliminated. A company spokesperson acknowledged that "the
Arbortech system solved our problem so completely, we applied for
and were named a runner-up for our home state's Governor's Pollution
Prevention Awards."

Right Choice Pays
Off in Many Ways
"One of the things we
liked best about Arbortech was their willingness to work with us as
we tried different cleaners and additive packages. We wanted to find
chemistry with the best combination of parts' cleaning ability, cost
and membrane 'friendliness' to ensure optimal success within every
aspect of operation."

"Guess
what we finally settled on to clean the parts? The Arbortech
membrane-cleaning product - TUF... That stuff does the best job
we've ever seen on our parts, and obviously, it runs great in the
recycling system." The company's Director of Environmental
Affairs, added, "This is the second time I've encountered
Arbortech's equipment. In my former post (with another company) we
used one of their systems to treat our wastewater prior to sewer
discharge, about 6,000 gallons per day. We found that the quality of the
treated water was so good we were able to use it as make-up to our
cooling tower. Here, these same two baths just keep cleaning parts;
we reuse the cleaner over and over and over again. This equipment is
terrific; these guys know their stuff.
